Sidebar Navigation
The sidebar is the persistent left panel that stays with you as you work. It shows your workspace name at the top, a search trigger below it, and your full page tree beneath that. Everything you’ve written lives in this tree — and every page in your world is one click away.
Click to navigate
Section titled “Click to navigate”Click any page entry in the sidebar to open it in the editor. The selected page gets a visual highlight with an accent left border so you always know where you are.
Clicking a different page switches to it immediately. If you click several pages in rapid succession, Inklings settles on the last one clicked — no errors, no stale content.
Expand and collapse parents
Section titled “Expand and collapse parents”Pages with children show a chevron to their left. Click the chevron (not the page title) to expand the subtree. Click it again to collapse.
When a child page is active — for example, because you navigated there via the command palette — its parent expands automatically so the active page is visible in the tree. You will not need to manually expand ancestors to find where you are.
Alphabetical ordering
Section titled “Alphabetical ordering”Pages at each depth level are sorted alphabetically. If you have “The Shattered Spire”, “Thornwall Keep”, and “The Verdant Undercity” as root-level pages, they appear in ascending alphabetical order. The same applies to children within any expanded parent.
Empty pages look different
Section titled “Empty pages look different”A page that was created but has no content yet appears in the tree with reduced opacity and italic text. You can still click it and navigate to it — the visual treatment is just a reminder that it is waiting for content.
The sidebar scrolls independently
Section titled “The sidebar scrolls independently”When your workspace grows large enough that the page tree overflows the visible sidebar height, the tree area scrolls independently. The workspace header, the search trigger, and the fixed footer buttons (Attachments, Trash, Settings) do not scroll — they stay in place while the page tree scrolls beneath them.
Workspace name
Section titled “Workspace name”The workspace name appears as a heading at the top of the sidebar, above the search trigger and page tree. If you work with multiple workspaces, this tells you which one you are currently in.
Context menu
Section titled “Context menu”Right-clicking a page in the sidebar opens a context menu with actions including:
- New child page — create a subpage directly under the selected page
- Rename — edit the page title inline
- Move to… — relocate the page in the hierarchy
- Delete — move the page to Trash

- Command Palette — Keyboard-driven navigation across your whole workspace
